Orphans Blast New Germany

The Orphans hosted the New Germany Dutchmen (Anyone else find that nickname kind of odd for New Germany?) and the game was over rather quickly.  The Orphans scored 9 runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back.  Adam Koch threw 5 scoreless innings to get the win for the O's

The Orphans will have a string of very important NSL North game as they Travel to Buffalo Wednesday July 8th, host Monticello on Friday July 10th and travel to Cokato to take on the Kingston Kings on Sunday July 12th.  This week will likely determine who wins the NSL North.  See you at the park! 

HL Take 3rd at GND Tourney

The Orphans hosted Winsted in the first round of the GND Tourney and lost a tough one 2-1.  Shane Kahn started on the mound and Aaron Desmaris finished for the Orphans.

The Orphans played Kimball in the 3rd place game on Saturday and defeated them 8-5 despite being very short on players for the game.  The team gutted it out pull out a win. 

Stueven's 7 RBI Lead O's Past Larks

The Orphans traveled to Loretto to take on the Larks Wednesday night.  Before the game John Stueven was over heard saying "Loretto is one of my favorite parks to play at."  We found out why as John went 4 for 5 with a 3 run double, 3 run home run and a 1 run double accounting for 7 of the 9 Orphan runs.  Jake Streich and Adam Koch threw for the Orphans allowing 5 runs to a very good hitting Loretto team.

Orphans beat Hutch, Sweep B's for Season

The Orphans hosted the Hutchinson Huskies on Sunday June 21st.  Hutch scored 1 run in the 1st off of Orphans started Shane Heber.  The O's responded in the bottom of the 1st when Andy Gagnon scored on a Ben Borrell sac fly and then scored a second time in the 3rd taking a 2-1 lead.  Patient Orphan hitters broke trough in the 6th with 4 runs to take a 6-1 lead.  Hutch scored 1 run in the 8th and 1 in the 9th off Orphan relieve Ben Borrell but that would not be enough at the Orphans win 6-3 and complete a season sweep of the Class "B" teams in the North Star League.

Orphans Tame Wildcats

The Orphans traveled to Winsted on Friday night to take on the Wildcats.  After only 1 hit and a 0-2 hole through 6 innings the Orphans busted out for 7 runs in the 7th and 5 runs in the 8th.  Taking a 11-2 lead into the bottom of the 8th.  Winsted responded with 5 runs to make it 11-7 going into the 9th which turned out to be the final score.

Orphans Shut Out by Buffalo

The Orphans inconsistencies continued on Wednesday night as they failed to score a run for the second time this season in a 3-0 loss to Buffalo.  Give Buffalo's young pitcher credit as he kept the ball on the edges of the strike zone most of the night.  Jake Streich started for the Orphans giving up 1 run over 7 innings.  Ben Borrell finished the game giving up 2 runs over 2 innings of work.

The Orphans will travel to Winsted to make up a game with the Wildcats on Friday June 19th and on Sunday June 21st the Orphans will host the Huskies from Hutchinson

O's Bounce Back, Beat Albertville 11-3

After a tough loss to Kingston the Orphans bounced back nicely for 2008 state tournament qualifier Albertville.  Shane Heber started on the hill for Howard Lake giving up only 3 runs over 6 innings of work.  While Heber did his job, Orphan batters attached Albertville pitching all night plating 11 runs including 2 different 4 run innings.

Kings Defeat Orphans

The O's hosted a much improved Kingston/Cokato Kings on Wednesday night.  Chris Picken threw a nice game for the Kings holding the O's to only 3 runs.  On the other side of it 13 free passes (walk, hit by pitch or intentional walk) proved to be the undoing for the Orphans as they lost a tough 3-4 game.

Heber Wins Pitcher Duel, Beats Rockford

The O's hosted a plucky Rockford team on a very chilly and windy Sunday afternoon.  Shane Heber pitched a excellent game allowing 1 run over 7 innings.  John Stueven knocked in Ryan long twice for the only two Orphan runs.  Adam Koch got the save scecuring the 2-1 win for Howard Lake.

O's beat St. Michael

The O's traveled to St. Micahel on Friday night to face a very tough Saints team.  The Orphans broke the game open in the 4th with a 6 run inning highlighted by a long Adam Koch home run.  The Saint kept chipping away but the Orphans held on for a 8-5 victory.

Rogers Shocks Orphans

The O's traveled to Rogers on Sunday May 31st to play.  Howard Lake led Rogers 5-2 going into the bottom of the 9th.  The Orphans gave the game away with a combination of walks, errors, misplays and timely Rogers hitting which led to a 4 run rally and defeat for the Orphans 6-5.

O's Top Maple Plain

The Orphans hosted Maple Plain on Friday May 29th and soundly defeated them 24-7.  Maple Plain scored 3 runs in the top of the first and HL rebounded with 4 in the bottom half of the inning and never looked back.  Jake Streich got the win for HL.  Orphan hitters banged out 25 hits during the contest.  One other game note, Maple Plain was missing several starters due to bachelor party activities.  Hope they had fun!

HL loses to Monti, beats Elk River

The Orphans traveled to Moticello on Friday May 22nd to take on the Pole Cats.  Monti held the Orphans to 3 hits as Monticello beat the Orphans 5-0. 

On Sunday, Elk River visted Memorial Park and after spotting Elk River 2 runs the Orphans bats came alive scoring 5 runs in the second inning highlighted by an Andy Gagnon bases loaded triple.  The Orphans scored 3 times in the 3rd, 3 in the 4th, 3 in the 5th, and 2 in the 6th a to take a 16-2 lead which ended up to be the final socre.

Orphans rally to beat Delano

The Howard Lake Orphans had a very entertaining win vs. Delano on Sunday.  The O's scored 1 in the 1st when Ryan Long scored on an Andy Gagnon triple.  Delano scored their run in the 4th on a walk to Kevin Jaunich with bases loaded.  That was the extent of the scoring through the first 10 innings.  In the top of the 11th Delano scored 2 runs.  In the bottom of the 11th the Orphans scored 3 with the game winner coming from the bat of Jesse Berg with 2 outs. 

The pitching for both sides kept hitters off balance all afternoon.  Jake Streich picked up the win for Howard Lake who moves to 3-0 in league play and 3-1 overall.

Orphans vs. Wildcats Rained Out

The Howard Lake Orphans trip to Winsted was rained out Friday.  A make up date will be announced eventually.

Orphans sink the Lakers 10-1

The Howard Lake Orphans traveled to Maple Lake on Sunday to take on the Lakers.  The O's got things going in the first scoring 3 runs off Laker starter Chad Raiche.  The Orphans scored 1 more in the 2nd when Andy Gagnon scored on a passed ball.  The Orphan bats went silent until the 8th where they opened up with 6 runs that inning thanks in large part to 4 walks issued by Lakers pitchers that inning (3 with bases loaded).

Jake Streich got the win for the Orphans pitching another strong game.  Shane Heber and Shane Kahn finished things up on the hill allowing only 1 run.  

Orphans Win NSL, Home Opener

The Orphans opened North Star League play and the new look Memorial Park with the DC Saints coming to town.  Great pitching, good defense and a few timely hits resulted in a 6-1 win for the home town team.  Shane Heber and Jake Streich threw for the Orphans.  Tim Sonnek got the scoring started for the Orphans with a 2 run triple.  John Stueven and Adam Koch also had big hit for the O's.

Orphans Lose Season Opener to Kimball

The Orphans lost a tough game at Kimball 7-8 on Saturday May 2nd.  For the most part the team looked like it was a little rusty.  It took the bats several innings to get the bats going and the pitchers allowed quite a few walks.  After being down 1-7 at one point the Orphans came storming back scoring 2 runs in the 7th, 2 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th but came up a run short when it counted.  On a positive note the Orphans successfully swiped 4 bases without a runner thrown out.  Andy Gagnon, Ben Borrell, Tom Borrell and Matt Donovan were all credited with stolen bases.  The Orphans also had their first home run of the season from Ben Borrell in the 9th with a man aboard. 

Construction Update

The Orphans have been working dilligently to have an upgraded Memorial Park ready for the season to start.  The addition of new dugouts and a new backstop will make a day at the park more enjoyable for both players and fans.
